At Boogie Beat, we create magical classes and workshops for children from birth to six years old. Within this wide age range, there’s a remarkable diversity in developmental stages, so we tailor each session to meet the unique needs of every group.
For our littlest participants—babies—we’ve seen how music, movement, and repetition can make a profound difference in their development.
A Heartwarming Moment at Wee Gems
On Friday’s , I visit Wee Gems in Corstorphine, a nursery I’ve been working with for over two years. The staff and I have built a strong relationship, and we often chat about how Boogie Beat benefits the children.
During a recent visit, we celebrated a breakthrough moment with a baby who had been part of our sessions for just over a month. For weeks, he had been quietly observing—watching every move but not participating. Then, suddenly, he joined in! During our Boogie Beat Shake, he smiled, moved, and performed every action perfectly!
It wasn’t just a small step—it was a leap. He had absorbed all the movements and songs we’d introduced over the weeks and brought them to life in one joyful session. The staff were amazed, and I was reminded yet again of how repetition and familiar routines can build confidence and spark engagement.
The Importance of Familiarity and Structure
In our Boogie Beat classes, we use a consistent structure with familiar songs and actions. This predictability helps babies feel secure and confident. They learn what to expect, which makes them more likely to participate and explore new activities.
For example, our warm-up songs include repetitive actions that babies can anticipate and imitate. This builds their confidence and sets the tone for the session. When we introduce a new story or song later, they are more open to trying something unfamiliar because they already feel comfortable and successful.
Holding Space for Exploration
The energy in a baby room is very different from that of a preschool room. While older children thrive on fast-paced, dynamic activities, babies need a slower, calmer approach.
This means giving them time—time to settle into the music, explore their surroundings, and discover what they can do. For instance, when we bring out bubbles accompanied by our specially composed Boogie Beat music, some babies immediately reach out to pop them, while others take longer to observe and engage.
It’s crucial to hold that space for exploration. As adults, we’re often tempted to rush to the next activity, but for babies, this unhurried time is invaluable. It allows them to process, experiment, and build their confidence at their own pace.
Why Repetition Matters
In today’s fast-paced world, where we’re constantly bombarded with information, it’s easy to overlook the importance of repetition. But for babies, repetition is key to learning. Familiar songs and actions help them develop memory, rhythm, and coordination. They also provide a sense of security, which is essential for exploration and growth.
By revisiting the same songs and activities week after week, we’re not just repeating for the sake of it. We’re reinforcing skills, building connections, and giving babies the confidence to take the next step in their developmental journey.
A Joyful Journey
Watching the transformation of the baby at Wee Gems was a powerful reminder of why we do what we do at Boogie Beat. It’s about creating moments of joy, building confidence, and giving children the time and space they need to thrive.
To anyone working with babies, I encourage you to embrace calm, unhurried moments. Hold space for exploration, and don’t underestimate the power of repetition. These small but meaningful practices can lead to incredible breakthroughs—just like the one we witnessed last week.
