Attending the second year of the #SBS (Small Business Sunday) event has once again left me feeling inspired, motivated and incredibly proud to be part of such a powerful small business community.
Run by Theo Paphitis, #SBS (Small Business Sunday) celebrated its 15th year in 2025, a huge milestone for a community that continues to champion and uplift small businesses across the UK. The event is held annually at the impressive International Convention Centre (ICC), in Birmingham and welcomes over 1,000 entrepreneurs, creators and innovators under one roof.
A Community Built on Resilience
This year’s theme was Resilience, a word that perfectly captured the spirit of the day. From navigating economic uncertainty to pivoting business models, resilience is something every small business owner understands.
It was fantastic to see so many children’s activity providers in the room, including Kidslingo, Drama Tots, Boogie Tots, Rubba Bubba and Tappy Toes. Sharing the space with fellow activity providers reinforced just how vibrant and supportive our sector truly is.
The event opened with an energetic performance from Kypros Kyprianou, before Theo himself took to the main stage to reflect on what the #SBS community has achieved over the past year, from major events like Spring Fair to the ever-growing network of winners. The scale of support that Theo gives to UK small businesses is genuinely remarkable.
Real Stories, Real Inspiration
One of the most powerful parts of the day was hearing directly from small business owners. A panel of three entrepreneurs shared their journeys from why they started, what challenges they faced, and how they pivoted when times became tough. Their honesty and determination were incredibly inspiring.
We also heard about the growing opportunities within TikTok Shop and how businesses can use the platform to expand their reach, proof that innovation and adaptability remain key ingredients for success.
The Pitch That Inspired Us All
A real highlight was watching three outstanding #SBS winners pitch to a panel of judges for a share of an investment fund. Listening to each business owner explain how that funding would transform their next stage of growth was both emotional and motivating. When the winners were announced later in the day, the atmosphere in the room was electric.
Protecting Your Business and Yourself!
Another standout session focused on protecting your business from burnout — something that resonates deeply with so many founders. Building a business takes passion and energy, but safeguarding your wellbeing is just as important as safeguarding your profits.
The day also offered:
- Professional headshots
- Quiet reflection areas
- Expert business advice sessions
- Pre-bookable mentoring opportunities
- Countless networking moments
Every corner of the ICC was buzzing with conversation, collaboration and connection.
A Powerful Fireside Chat
The day concluded with a truly unforgettable fireside chat with Katie Piper. You could have heard a pin drop as she shared her deeply moving story from unimaginable trauma to founding the Katie Piper Foundation and inspiring millions through her books, television work and podcasts.
Her story of resilience aligned perfectly with the event’s theme. Katie’s strength, honesty and compassion left the entire audience reflecting on what resilience really means.
Why #SBS Matters
Small Business Sunday is more than an annual event, it’s a thriving, supportive community where business owners feel seen, celebrated and supported. In a world where running a small business can often feel lonely, #SBS reminds us that we are part of something bigger.
To Theo and the entire #SBS team, thank you for creating such an incredible platform. The energy, generosity and encouragement within this community are unmatched.
I’m already looking forward to next year.
