At Boogie Beat, storytelling is at the heart of everything we do.

Every single class, every nursery workshop, and every intergenerational session we run is built around a story. Sometimes it’s a well-loved traditional tale, sometimes it’s one of our own Boogie Beat stories created by the team – but there is always a story leading the way.

This Week’s Story: The Billy Goats Gruff

This week, we’re diving into a true classic: The Billy Goats Gruff.

Traditional tales like this are absolutely perfect for Boogie Beat. They’re familiar, reassuring, full of rhythm and repetition, and they give children the confidence to join in – whether that’s through actions, movement, singing, or simply watching and taking it all in.

We use stories like The Billy Goats Gruff to:

Encourage language and communication

Support listening and attention skills

Inspire imaginative play and movement

Build confidence and participation in every child

And of course… they’re great fun to act out!

Traditional Tales… and Our Own Boogie Beat Stories

We love sharing traditional tales in our sessions – stories that many of us grew up with and that children still adore today.

But we also have something very special: Boogie Beat’s own stories, created by our wonderful team.

These original stories are written specifically with music, movement, imagination and inclusion in mind. They’re designed to:

Work beautifully with our songs and actions

Be accessible for all children

Spark curiosity, confidence and joy

Some children will jump right in. Others might watch, wander, or explore the space in their own way. And that’s absolutely fine – they’re still taking it all in.

Not All Learning Looks the Same

I know this from personal experience.

My own son was the little boy who would spend an entire class running in circles with something in his mouth, dribbling, never sitting still. At the time, I honestly didn’t think he was paying attention at all.

But later at home… he could sing the songs back to me.

He had absorbed everything in his own way.

That’s one of the things we truly believe at Boogie Beat: children don’t all learn in the same way, and they don’t need to.

Celebrating Books and Our Amazing Libraries

Because we love stories and books so much, we also want to celebrate the huge role that libraries play in our communities.

Libraries have changed so much over the last 20 years. They’re no longer just places to borrow books (although that’s still wonderful!) – they’re now:

Inclusive, welcoming community spaces

Places to play, explore and learn

Somewhere families can spend time together

My children and I go to the library every single Friday after swimming lessons. We go to choose new books, play with the toys, and just be part of that lovely community space.

And I have to give a huge shout out to Prestonpans Library and their amazing staff team – they really do go above and beyond. We are so lucky to have them.

At Boogie Beat, we’ll keep doing what we love best: bringing stories to life through music, movement, imagination and inclusion – one story at a time.
